1996 will be the third Summer season for On The Rocks Cafe Bar. From the opening in 1994 the cafe has been going from strength to strength. After taking so many years to build it's no surprise Australian/Greek owner George Trikilis takes so much pride in his accomplishment.
The bar is open from early morning to late at night, so many new friends have
been made and old acquaintances re-united. For some it wasn't just the second or
third year to Telendos - one couple had been coming for their tenth year running!
The most wonderful thing is that many of the friends we've made will be
returning again in 1996.
The menu was improved to offer a greater selection of hot and cold snacks such
as Filled Jacket Potatoes, Seafood Salad and Baguette Sandwiches. The 1996 menu
is even better with a wider choice. 1995 also saw the introduction of the O.T.R. Burger and Mountain Burger; both
were hits from the outset and for some it wasn't just a mountain it was more
like Everest!
The drinks menu was improved as well, four new beers; two ciders, and several
new and exotic cocktails were added to the infamous On The Rocks Cocktail menu
so there's a choice of well over 200 now. There is a souvenir On The Rocks
T-shirt available to buy now listing the favourite cocktails.
On The Rocks doesn't yet have accommodation to rent (George is still working on
that!!) but set away from the hustle of the 'Telendos Port' the rooms and hotel
around the cafe are in an ideal position being so quiet and close to the sea.
Staying on Telendos in itself is perfect for any
holiday-maker, it's peaceful and relaxing. But, if you want discos or hustle and
bustle it is only a matter of a five-minute taxi-boat over to Kalymnos, and when
you've had enough it's back over to Telendos for a good nights sleep away from
the cars and motorbikes. The taxi-boats leave every half an hour from both
Myrties and Telendos. Please note this is G.M.T- Greek Maybe Time!
THINGS TO DO ON TELENDOS
There are some beautiful beaches on Telendos on which to relax and soak up the
sun. The cleanest and nicest bays are those of Plaka and Pothia. Idylic
coves with crystal clear water ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Potha Beach
is also a step into the past as there are the ruins of a village house. The next
beach along is the beautiful Paradise Beach. For the more energetic
holiday-maker there's the walk to Ayios Konstantinos to consider. Set high on
Mount Raki, it's about an hour and a half walk and a bottle of water or two are
essential. There are also boat trips from Telendos to Emporios and around the
island to see the beautiful sunset.
THE ISLE OF TELENDOS
In 554AD a massive earthquake lasting 14 days separated Telendos from Kalymnos,
during which a whole village was submerged by the sea. Some may doubt the-existence
of the sunken village but you can in fact see the outline of house walls in the
shallow water's edge. Another village and medieval castle were left abandoned
high on Telendos's Mount Raki. Ayios Konstantinos the village church is still
visited by locals on holy festivals and by only the more adventurous tourist -
Even though Telendos is only a small island it has an abundance of churches. Set
on the rocky coastline is Ayios Yiorgios - the church of St George so called due
to the legend that behind the church lies the horse hoof marks in the rock said
to be St George's steed. Ayia Panaya (St Marias Church) on the pathway to Hoklakas beach is the main church on Telendos and has a big celebration in it's
honour on August 14th. The ruins of Ayios Vasillos are the oldest on Telendos
and within the ruins you can still find the occasional piece of pottery or piece
of carved marble.
Ayios Haralambos is set within the grounds of On The Rocks Cafe; no one really knows the date of the church - there seems to be a mixture of ages. Along with the ruins of the church there are pipes said to be part of a old sauna. Ayla Panaya is another church and is within the grounds of the cemetery.
